She arrives a few minutes after 10AM and finds Amy Adams as American hopeful actress Delysia. But when the lady is called away briefly Pettigrew swipes the business card laying there and heads off to the address to take the job that another will be sent for. We see her in an office trying to find work but the lady there clearly doesn't have a very high opinion of Pettigrew. Frances McDormand (with a very nice British accent) is frumpy and dull Miss Pettigrew, a housekeeper who was just dismissed. Times are already hard and work is sometimes scarce. People are already talking about the Germans and the possibility of war. Also starring Ciarán Hinds and Shirley Henderson (Aberforth Dumbledore and Moaning Myrtle, respectively, in the Harry Potter movies). I can't believe that McDormand didn't get ANY award nominations for it. Frances McDormand plays Miss Pettigrew to her fullest, as does Amy Adams as the ditsy Delysia.
Movie miss pettigrew lives for a day movie#
The movie is at once a nostalgia piece, but also reminding us of the conditions in England on the verge of WWII, and looking at the obvious phoniness of the high society lifestyle. This probably won't be a one-way street after all. Delysia introduces Guinevere to high society, but Guinevere senses something unfulfilled in Delysia. Frances McDormand plays Guinevere Pettigrew, an unemployed governess in 1930s London who goes to work for giggly, high-strung actress Delysia Lafosse (Amy Adams), who is in relationships with three men at once. "Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day" features such a storyline. Title (Brazil): "A Vida num Só Dia" ("The Life in Only One Day")Īn important plot device in cinema is when a character goes through a change, whether on his/her own or through influence from an outside party. The plot is well-resolved and the film is entertaining. "Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day" is a different romantic comedy, supported by a great cast with Frances McDormand and Amy Adams, beautiful costumes and sets and magnificent music score from the 40´s. Meanwhile Miss Pettigrew meets the lingerie designer Joe Blomfield (Ciarán Hinds), who seems to be attracted to her. Miss Pettigrew helps Delysia to resolve her affairs and learn that Delysia has a true love, a poor piano player that has invited her to move to New York with him. Soon she befriends and is hired by Delysia, a beautiful woman that manipulates her two lovers to live comfortably, sing in a nightclub and be cast for a play. The social assistant refuses to offer another employment to her but Miss Pettigrew grabs the address of the American actress and singer Delysia Lafosse (Amy Adams) on her desk and heads to Delysia´s fancy apartment. In London in the beginning of World War II, the middle-aged Miss Guinevere Pettigrew (Frances McDormand) is unemployed and hunger after being fired by her alcoholic employer. The only problem is that the movie does try too hard at having fun. They have a great chemistry and works as a great team. Adams' light frothy performance contrast perfectly with McDormand's tough exterior. This is jammed packed old style light comedy. McDormand and Adams are perfect together. Delysia has to make a choice with Charlotte Warren (Christina Cole) just as desperate to get her acting role. At a party, Guinevere catches the eye of designer Joe Blomfield (Ciarán Hinds). Her sugar daddy is possessive nightclub owner Nick Calderelli but her true love is pianist Michael Pardue, the guy coming out of prison who was imprisoned partly due to Delysia. Delysia is sleeping with producer's son Phil Goldman to get a staring role in a play. Her employment agency won't give her another job and she steals a job with American actress Delysia Lafosse (Amy Adams). She loses her soup kitchen food when she spots Edythe (Shirley Henderson) with a man. She loses her suitcase to Michael (Lee Pace) coming out of prison. Miss Guinevere Pettigrew (Frances McDormand) gets fired from another job.
